Golden Compass

Very good.

Not for children.

Certainly the best of the "Fantasy" films that have been released SINCE Fellowship, but not a grand slam.

This review says it all.

This review says too much.

The final fight is really bad and the dialog in the last 30 minutes hurts.

But before that happens, the movie is breath-taking.

Structure-wise, there are few surprises. Style-wise, it's a masterpiece.

ASIDE: The Polar Bear duel is chilling to behold. That is not a pun.

ASIDE: The anti-god themes are not prevalent in this film, especially given that we don't know WHO god is yet in the story (although we know what the church is). Once we do, we can get around fighting for individual thought and secular humanism.
